Abstract

competitiveness within their exigent economic conditions. Yet, the social side of M&As is rarely considered in the planning and implementation of these strategic organisational change processes. In this study, first, a background of the M&A scenario, the post-acquisition typology and its short-comings are provided. Next, the social identity approach on M&As is used to explore the impact of M&A activities on employees, such as potential loss of social identity. Finally, Activity Theory is used as a management tool to address the organisational identity aspects during post-acquisition integration stages. Throughout this study, high attention is paid to the theoretical and managerial underpinnings for strategic planning and best practices within M&A contexts. Towards the end, the implications of this study are outlined for the development of guidelines to utilise Activity Theory as a useful framework for managing M&A implementation.
