Abstract

Analysis of doctoral dissertations awarded by universities in the field of Library and Information Science (LIS) highlights the structure and evolution of concepts in the field of research. It also indicates the direction in which, a specific subject field is moving. We (The authors) carefully analyze the bibliographic details of doctoral dissertations submitted and awarded by Indian universities in the field of LIS for past three decades and traced 1043 dissertations on the topic. The relevant data required for the study was obtained from various sources and a master spreadsheet containing unique records was created for the purpose of analysis and interpretation. We classified the dissertations into various categories looking at the key concepts or primary theme of the research. We have also examined the distribution of dissertations across key concepts, universities, and research supervisors.
