Abstract

Of late, democracy has assumed a significant global acceptance. The Term "End of history" has gained currency and has become a part of political vocabulary. "End of history" does not mean demise of history but refers to end of authoritarian phase of Government and emergence of democracy as the most acceptable form of Government. Democracy is not a new concept but its relevance has acquired a new significance after the end of the cold war. On gaining Independence from the British Raj, we Indians made a deliberate choice in favour of establishing a secular democratic polity. Several alternatives to democracy were available to our leaders to choose from.
