Abstract

The paper explores green retailing issues and challenges faced by Indian retailers. Data was obtained by interviewing retail store managers, store designers, and sales and promotion officers in green retail stores, and the transcripts of interviews were content analysed using NVivo software. Credibility of environmental claims, consumers’ understanding and perceptions of green products, product displays at retail stores, and financial and marketing feasibility of environmental-friendly retail operations were identified as green retailing issues and challenges. Issues and challenges specific to Indian retailers were highlighted. The study is limited to Indian sample, tends not to generalise the findings and does not have a representation to retailing industry.
