Abstract
After India's independence, government decided to reserve power generation and distribution exclusively for the public sector. The reason for this was that the generation of power was dismally low at 1369MW. The public sector was successful in increasing the power generation capacity of the country 50 folds to 69000 MW by the end of year 1992. Also the rural electrification target was met to an extent of 85%. Apart from that . the regional and state grids were set up.
