Abstract

Established global players as well as the emerging Indian MNCs need to globalize their research and development (R&D) activities, alongside manufacturing, procurement. etc., in order to support their aggressive growth strategies, accelerate their time to market and build up their innovative capabilities. This is an exploratory study to understand the phenomenon of globalization of R&D, and conceptualize the organizational logic of a global IR&D network and the evolution of the technological capabilities of an R&D subsidiary in the context of its parent's global business strategy. An 'exemplary case' of a late follower (in the telecommunication industry). which has aggressively adopted a market-led global R&D strategy, has been chosen as the unit of analysis. Grounded in the case data, the authors propose maps which could be used by managers to support decisions on globalization of their F,&D efforts, explore the evolution of the technological capabilities of their R&D subsidiaries, and manage the portfolio of projects.
