Abstract
As a part of SMIC course the team was given a corpus of Rs 1.25 lakh for investment with an investment horizon of 4 months. The investments could be made in Equities, debt and short-term money market securities. Investing in derivate instruments, commodities and currencies was not allowed. The ethos of the course revolved around investments and not short -term trading. Our team pursued the philosophy of investing in fundamentally strong companies with omprehendible business models that provide attractive short-term investment opportunities. We adopted a top down approach to identify sectors that looked attractive for investments and provided us with a diversified pool of stocks.Sectors chosen for investment included Auto, Aviation, BFSI, Ceramics & Granite, Infrastructure -General, Metal & Mining, Retail and Tele Communications. Once the sectors were established, we went for stock selection by using multi-stage filter process. These filters included mandatory filters as prescribed in course manual, followed by additional fundamental filters which were used to do a ratio based analysis to determine the holistic financial health of the company. The stocks that cleared the above filters were subjected to sector specific filters that based on business intricacies of the sector. At the final stage we tried to ascertain if there were any positive triggers associated with the stocks, as these triggers would only help us reap gains in the short investment horizon we had.
