Abstract
Arthashastri’s philosophy was to identify fundamentally strong and growing companies and invest in them with the object of creating an alpha. We started our 16 weeks (30 November 2018 to 15 March 2019) investment journey by undertaking a risk profile survey to find our individual risk scores. Post collating our scores, we found that we as a team have a high risk appetite. This helped in formulating our team’s guiding philosophy and assisted in deciding that we should invest in large and mid-cap companies. Based on our understanding of the economy, we narrowed down on the sectors we wanted to be invested in. We also agreed on taking NSE 200 as our benchmark for evaluating our portfolio performance. We were allocated a corpus of INR 150,000 lakhs as a team to invest only in equity markets. There were a few preliminary filters which were to adhere to during our investment horizon. 6 of us team members had the responsibility of analysing one or two sectors each and pick stocks for investment. The sectors were selected based on criteria such as government initiatives, potential impact due to elections, demand and supply factors affecting the sector. The stock picks had to be in line with our guiding philosophy and satisfy the criteria i.e. market cap of greater than INR 3000 crores and a positive net income.
