Abstract

Every team as a part of SMIC was guided by an investment philosophy. Team Bull Riders followed the philosophy of investing in fundamentally strong assets. The team received a corpus of INR 1,50,000 to invest in common equity. Out of the total corpus, they could invest 30% into debt funds. The time horizon for the course was 5 months. Trading in derivatives, foreign exchanges, commodities and short selling were prohibited. At any point in time, we were asked to keep a maximum of 15% in cash. After establishing an investment philosophy, the risk profile of each member of the team was determined. The team then collectively decided to take NIFTY 200 as their benchmark. Followed by this, the team members each started researching on sectors. Each member shortlisted a sector after providing a profitable rationale behind their selection. Post this, the team members shortlisted top-performing stocks to invest in via fundamental analysis. The fundamental analysis involved analysis of key ratios, quarterly results and few other parameters. Once the sectors and stocks were shortlisted, the team began to invest in these stocks using quantitative approaches such as Black Letterman to determine weights for asset allocation. Immense time and efforts were applied in the determination of a risk management strategy for the team. It mainly involved diversification of stocks into various sectors, setting stop losses etc. The team faced a few hurdles as the markets were highly volatile during this time horizon, mainly at the end due to the outbreak of the coronavirus. Nevertheless, following the market news relating to the stocks diligently helped the team from incurring heavier losses.
