Abstract

The burden of chronic diseases is rapidly increasing worldwide, and their prevalence is rising by affecting a large proportion of the population at an early stage of life. Presently, chronic diseases are one of the leading causes of mortality in the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines chronic illness as diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes. The US National Center for Health Statistics defines chronic disease as a disease that lasts for three months or longer and cannot be prevented by vaccines or cured by medication, nor do they just disappear. The focus of this paper is to provide HR managers with insights about the management and understanding of the needs of chronically ill employees. This article further highlights the requirement of specific HR and health practices to support employees with chronic illness.
