Abstract

This paper first reviews the major researches that have taken place on the topic of Indian Bank performances during the last decade. It then compares, on various parameters taken together, relative performances of 37 leading Indian banks during the period 2004-05 to 2013-14 on yearly basis using the multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) approach. This study throws light on how the major banks have changes year after year during the period with respect the parameters studies. MDS analysis reveals that the four (4) banks – SBI, ICICI, AXIS and PNB – differ significantly than the other 33 banks in all years during the period. Next by using principal component analysis (PCA), we confirm that those differences was mainly attributable to one variable viz. NIM only. Thus this MDS approach brings out an important features of inter-banks’ differentiating parameters where comparison of different entities are performed with the help of several attributes or performance indicators.
