Abstract
Shailesh Singh, Chairman of the Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy (KCA), looked at the box office collection reports of Kannada movies for the first six months of the year and felt dejected. More than 60 movies had been released, and most of them had failed even to recover their costs. The number of successful movies could be counted on fingertips. KCA was set up by the state government with the objective of overall promotion and development of the movie industry in the Indian State of Karnataka. As the Chairman of the Academy, Shailesh Singh, was extremely concerned about the dismal success rate of Kannada movies. Being a veteran in the industry with more than 40 years of experience as a highly successful producer and director, he was aware of the multiple problems faced by Kannada movies. Of late, he was also under pressure from Kannada movie producers to take up their cause before the industry suffered further setbacks. He wondered what could be done to revive the Kannada movie industry which was a part of Indian movie industry
