Abstract

Tribal communities in India have been on the lower end of the development curve for centuries. Amidst economic crisis and lack of basic amenities, the reproductive health of tribal women, especially adolescents, often gets de-prioritized. This study has looked at the reproductive health practices and awareness amongst adolescent girls in the Koraga community in Southern India. A community-based study was carried out adopting the descriptive research design to study awareness regarding reproductive health among tribal adolescent girls. The present study finds that awareness was lacking in adolescent girls regarding important aspects of reproductive health. The study results indicated that they lack knowledge regarding reproductive health especially contraception, HIV and STDs transmission and prevention. All the adolescent girls practised restrictions during menstruation and did not participate in religious rituals. A multi-dimensional approach focusing on capacity building of mothers and adolescents on sexual and reproductive health is recommended to improve their knowledge and practices.
